How to block websites on Chrome via desktop with an extension

‘Blocksite’ is an extension popularly used to block a site on Chrome. This is considered one of the easiest ways. It is a free website blocker with premium options. You can block up to 3 sites in the free version or buy the premium starting at ₹ 34.50 pm for 12 months. Below is the stepwise process –

1. Open Chrome and Type ‘Blocksite’ to search. You can also go to the Chrome Web Store.
2. Open ‘Blocksite’ and you will see the below screen. Click on ‘Add to Chrome’.

3. Now, you will see the below screen. Click on ‘Add to Chrome’.

4. Next, an extension is added to Chrome and you can pin it and then click on the shortcut from the top right corner of the browser.

5. Go to the Website that you want to block. Click on the Extension and ‘Block this site’.

The site will be blocked and when you try to visit it, it will appear as below –

Alternatively, you can visit the ‘Blocksite’ website and add the URL of the sites that you would like to block.

There are also other options like ‘Redirect’ and ‘Schedule’.

Blocksite also offers other features like –

‘Focus Mode’ for temporary restriction
‘Block by words’ blocks a website domain/URL with a certain word or phrase
‘Block by categories’ block similar category sites like adult, social, gambling, etc.

Moreover, if you want to use ‘Blocksite’ in Chrome’s incognito mode, you can enable it in the extension’s settings.

How to block websites on Chrome for iPhone and Android?

Method 1 – Block Websites on Chrome via iPhone and Android using ‘Google Family Link’

You can block a site on iPhone and Android Chrome through ‘Google Family Link’ – a parental control feature for parents to control certain content from their children on the phone.

Basically, you can find this from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

You can connect the Google account of the children to the parent’s phone. Well, some features may differ between iOS and Android mobile.

Go to the child’s account and further to Manage Settings.

Then, go to Filters on Google Chrome>Manage Sites>Blocked>Add an Exception. Insert domain/URL to block and tap on ‘Save’.

Moreover, iPhone users can use the ‘Screen Time function’ to restrict or limit access to apps, downloads, settings, purchases, etc.

Method 2 – Block Websites on Chrome via iPhone and Android using ‘Screen Time’

From privacy settings, tap on ‘Screen Time’ and then on ‘Turn on Screen Time’.

Tap on it again as prompted.

Then, tap on ‘This is my iPhone’ to control access for various aspects of your child’s device from yours. Another option that you would see is ‘This is my child’s iPhone’. It can restrict content on your child’s iPhones.

Go to ‘Content & Privacy Restrictions’ and scroll down to ‘Web Content’.

Tap on ‘Limit Adult Websites’ and enter the URL to block under ‘Add website’

Thus, the site will be blocked and inaccessible.

Note – You should set a passcode for any of the above options i.e. whether it is your phone or your child’s. You can do this from the option ‘Use Screen Time passcode’.

Method 3 – Block websites on Chrome via Android and iPhone using the ‘Blocksite’ mobile app.

We discussed the ‘BlockSite’ extension for Chrome in the previous part. Well, it is also available as a mobile app that can block websites and mobile applications.

Below are the easy steps to use it for blocking websites on Chrome –

  1. Download the BlockSite app from the Google Play Store or Apple Store. As it installs and opens, allow different access to settings as prompted.
  2. On the dashboard, tap on the plus icon and enter the site domain that you want to restrict. Also, block mobile applications from the ‘App Suggestions’ section. Tap on ‘Done’ once you are done adding the site/app.
  3. Now, when you try to access any site in your browser or app on your phone, you will see a block screen.

Block websites in Chrome using built-in parental control

We discussed parental controls before for Android and iPhone. It is a service through which you can track and control your child’s online activity. You can limit or restrict certain content online through this.

Below are the easy steps to set up parental control in Chrome on a Windows computer (MacOS has a feature called Screen Time but it does not block Chrome sites) –

Steps for Windows 11 –

  1. Set up a child account by clicking on the Windows menu > Settings > Accounts. Then, another window will appear on which the ‘Create one for a child’ option will be there. Click on it and create an account.
  2. After that, access that account from a Microsoft account.
  3. Under the Content Filters option, go to ‘Blocked sites’ and insert the domain/URL to block. Then, add it to the block list by clicking on +.
  4. Add more sites through the same process.
  5. Check if the site is blocked from your child’s account in Chrome.

How to block websites on Chrome with the SafeSearch Feature?

Below are the steps to block websites using the SafeSearch feature in your Chrome browser –

On the Google Search page, click on the Google Account icon on the top right corner and click on ‘SafeSearch’. On the next screen, choose your settings to Filter or Blur explicit content.

Editing hosts file on Windows on Chrome To Block Sites

What is a host file? Well, the web page domains and IP addresses that you visit are included in this local text file. You need good knowledge of the workings of the operating system to use this method to block sites. Also, you can only edit it using an administrator account.

Moreover, when choosing this method you can block multiple sites together. However, it will not block only Chrome, it will block sites for all the browsers on the system.

Below are the steps to block websites on Windows using this method –

  1. The hosts file is available at ‘C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc.’ You can open the same through Notepad, Nano, or any other text editor.
  2. Type localhost IP address / 127.0.0.1 after the ‘#’ to add the new line. And, add domain names in each new line that you want to block.
  3. ‘Save’ the file (but not in .txt format)
  4. Verify if the sites are blocked in the Chrome.

Editing the Hosts file on MacOS to Block Web Pages

Below are the steps to block websites by editing the hosts file on MacOS –

  1. Go to Utilities tab > Terminal
  2. Type ‘sudo nano/etc/hosts.’ in the command bar to open hosts file in nano using the administrator’s password.
  3. It will look like the one we discussed for ‘Windows’ with multiple lines. So as discussed in those steps, enter the local host IP address in the next line > Press Tab > Add domain name/s to block in each new line.
  4. Press CMD + O to save and exit with CMD + X.
  5. Verify if they are blocked in Chrome.

How Blocking Websites on Chrome Work through Your Router

When you block websites using a router it will block them on all of the devices connected to it. Below are the steps for this method –

  1. Get into the admin panel using the IP address from the box of the router. (You can also access it from the Command prompt of your Windows computer by typing ‘ipconfig’. When you press enter you will see your IP address in the ‘Default gateway’ section.)
  2. Go to Chrome and enter the IP address in the search tab.
  3. Open the router’s panel using the login credentials of the admin.
  4. Find Settings page for blocking the sites > Go to the ‘Security’ tab (it may vary from router to router). There would be a section for ‘Parental control’. The ‘Template’ section can help you understand the process to block specific URLs.
  5. Click on ‘Apply’ or a similar option after you have inserted the sites to block.

Note – The above steps may differ slightly from router to router.

Using Chrome’s BlockList URL Feature to Block Website

Chrome’s BlockList URL feature is useful for administrators who manage Google Accounts of any company or organization. Google Admin Account is used for this method to block sites on multiple devices. Below are the basic steps –

  1. Go to Google Admin Console through admin.google.com. Then, click on Devices on the home page and go to Chrome>Settings.
  2. From Users & Browsers, go to the user profile (organisation) and then to the section of ‘URL Blocking’.
  3. Add the domain/URLs that you would like to block and ‘Save’.
  4. Verify it on any device and confirm if the site is blocked.

How to unblock websites on Chrome?

The unblocking depends on the method that you use to block a website on Chrome. Below are the steps –

BlockSite Extension on Chrome

On the desktop – Click on Blocksite extension icon > ‘Edit block list’ > ‘Trash’ icon with the site you want to unblock
On the Chrome – Open the App and go to Blocked Site List > Tap on the ‘Trash’ icon

Parental Control On Windows

Child’s account from Microsoft account manager > Content filters > Blocked sites section > Delete URL

Editing The Hosts File

Open the hosts file in the text editor and go down to the last line to delete URLs that you blocked. Then, save it.

URL BlockList

Google Admin Console >URL Blocking > Delete the domain /URL that you blocked.
