How to Enable Greylisting in WHM?

Greylisting is a smart technology that stops spam by testing the behavior of the sending server. It helps you deal with unwanted junk emails as a server owner.

What is Greylisting

Greylisting is an email protection service that blocks messages from unrecognized senders for a few minutes. Most spam servers are built to send millions of emails quickly and they never try to send a message a second time if it fails. A real email server will always try to deliver the message again after a short wait.

When your server sees a repeat attempt from the same sender, it recognizes the email as legitimate and lets it through. This simple wait-and-see method removes a massive amount of automated junk mail from your inbox.

Steps to Enable Greylisting

You must have root access to your VPS or Dedicated server to manage this global email setting. Enabling this feature affects every domain and email account hosted on your machine.

The management screen is found within the primary email settings of your administrative panel.

  • Access your WHM dashboard using your primary administrator credentials.
  • Search for Greylisting in the side menu and click on the result.
  • Click the OFF button to switch the service to ON and start the protection.
  • Set the time limits for how long the server should wait before accepting a retry.
  • Add the IP addresses of servers you trust so their mail never gets delayed.
  • Check the Common Mail Providers tab to ensure big services like Gmail are allowed.
  • Press the Save button at the bottom to apply all your new email rules.

Monitoring and Reports

You can track how many emails the server has delayed by looking at the built-in reports. This data helps you see if any important messages are waiting to be delivered.

The report interface shows the sender and recipient details for every deferred message.

  • Click on the Reports tab to see a live list of delayed email attempts.
  • Use the search box to find a specific email address that might be stuck.
  • Look for repeated failures from the same IP to find active spammers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Greylisting delay all my emails?

Only the very first email from a new sender will face a small delay of a few minutes. Once the sender is recognized by your server, all their future emails will arrive instantly. Your regular contacts will not experience any delivery delays at all.

Will I lose any important emails with this?

No legitimate email server will ever give up after just one failed attempt. Modern mail systems are designed to retry delivery several times over many hours. Your important messages will arrive safely once the short waiting period expires.

Can I skip this for my favorite senders?

Yes you can add any specific IP address to the Trusted Hosts list in WHM. This ensures that mail from those specific sources is never delayed by the Greylisting system. It is a great way to prioritize your most important business partners.

What is the difference between this and SpamAssassin?

Greylisting blocks mail based on the behavior of the sending server before the email is even accepted. SpamAssassin reads the content of the email after it arrives to look for junk keywords. Using both tools together provides the best possible protection for your server.
